What Habitat For Humanity Does

The overwhelming need for housing in our communities has provided Habitat For Humanity with a unique opportunities to change lives in our local neighborhoods.

Affordable, decent housing is one of our most basic human needs, yet it is in alarmingly short supply in our very own neighborhoods and throughout the world. A decent place to call home creates stability, launching families onto a positive trajectory of generational change that includes hope, improved health, and a better quality of life.

Since its founding, Habitat for Humanity International has built more than 800,000 homes, providing shelter for over 1 million people in nearly 80 countries. A new Habitat home is completed somewhere in the world every 21 minutes!

Working with volunteers, families and individuals, corporations, congregations and donors HFH is able to tackle this important housing issue in local communities.  HFH is dedicated to making home-ownership possible for low-income, hardworking families and individuals.

Hand Up, not a Hand Out!

Habitat for Humanity offers a hand up, not a hand out.  With the support of community partners, donors and volunteers, HFH constructs new or renovates existing homes alongside Habitat Partner Homebuyers.

In addition to a down payment and monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest Sweat Equity hours building their future Habitat home and the homes of other Habitat Homebuyers. Habitat homes are sold to Partner Homebuyers at no profit and financed with affordable loans.

Shelter is a basic human need and Habitat for Humanity strives to achieve its goal of eliminating substandard housing by making decent, sustainable and affordable housing a reality for all.

Giving Back

Habitat For Humanity educates volunteers and interested community members of all ages on how important it is to give back.

HFH believes everyone needs a decent, affordable place to live and everyone is welcome to help with the work, regardless of race, religion, age, gender, political views or any of the other distinctions that too often divide people.

Habitat Family Partners Participate

Habitat and the families who partner with HFH understand that a home is a far-reaching investment. A home is a strong foundation on which the families who partner with Habitat can grow and thrive.  When families partner with Habitat, they start down a new path — one with far fewer barriers to a better, healthier, more financially stable life.

Habitat homeowners play a hands-on role in eliminating those barriers, beginning with the sweat equity hours they perform.  As part of the program, every partner family must perform a minimum of 200-250 hours of sweat equity, which includes working on their own house and those of other Habitat families.

With the help of volunteers, they build and renovate the places they will call home. They attend financial education and budget planning classes. Some help staff the local Habitat ReStore; others serve on committees or help out in the local Habitat office.  In addition, every family assumes a no-interest, no-profit mortgage with payments based on family income.

All of them are proactive, not passive. Investing, not receiving. They are seizing an opportunity, and — with a hand up — they are changing their own futures.
